Bill y Tom Kaulitz ( 1 de Septiembre 1989) entraron en la música de
mano de su padrastro, que es un músico aún en activo en Magdeburg. Tras
un concierto en 2001 en su ciudad, Magdeburg, conocieron a Gustav
Schäfer ( 8 de Septiembre 1988) y Georg Listing ( 31 de Marzo 1987),
con los que fundaron su primer grupo musical, llamado Devilish. Después
de que Bill Kaulitz tomara parte en el programa Kinder-Star-Search (el
lluvia de estrellas alemán para niños), el grupo fue descubierto en
2003 por el productor Peter Hoffmann. Sony BMG contrató finalmente a
Tokio Hotel. Hoffmann junto con David Jost y Pat Benzner entraron en la
producción de sus canciones. Sin embargo, poco antes del lanzamiento de
su primer disco, Sony anuló el contrato. En 2005, fue Universal Music
Group quien contrató a Tokio Hotel y trabajaron para lanzar a Tokio
Hotel al éxito.

El video de su single debut, Durch den Monsun, salió en televisión
en Julio de 2005 (en Alemania), y desde entonces el grupo se hizo con
un gran número de jóvenes fans. El Single salió el 15 de Agosto de 2005
y llegó rápidamente al número 1 en las listas de ventas de Alemania y
Austria. El disco debut que contenía este single, llamado Schrei, se
mantuvo en lo más alto de la lista de ventas incluso meses después de
su lanzamiento. Al año siguiente, en 2006, volvieron a grabar algunas
de sus canciones, probablemnte por el cambio de voz que sufrió el
cantante en esa época, a causa de su edad (tenía 16 años). Además, su
cambio de look también fue una incitación para volver a sacar ese
disco, con nuevo diseño, fotos y canciones regrabadas con su nueva voz,
llamado Schrei: so laut du kannst.
El 23 de Febrero de 2007 salió el segundo álbum del grupo, Zimmer
483, habiéndose presentado ya el 26 de Enero su primer single: Übers
Ende der Welt. También a la venta en España en sus dos ediciones,
normal y deluxe, el cual una vez más pudo llegar a la lista numero 1 en
Europa.

En España, salió la primera versión del disco Schrei a principios de
2006, a pesar de que la segunda ya estaba a la venta en Alemania.
Además, para la primavera, llegó también a España su segundo DVD,
Schrei live, con subtítulos en español.
En Francia, salió su primer álbum en otoño de 2006, en su segunda
versión, y alcanzó el puesto 19 en las listas en su primera semana. En
este país aún siguen cosechando grandes éxitos. Sus discos llegan a las
primeras posiciones de las listas de ventas y en 2007 les han concedido
el disco de oro por su primer album.
En 2006 dieron conciertos en otros países en los que eran ya un
éxito sabido, como Francia o Polonia, e incluso dieron un concierto en
Moscú ante miles de espectadores, algo inesperado. En su gira de 2007,
darán conciertos en otros 7 países a parte de Alemania, como Francia,
Polonia, República Checa o Hungría entre otros. En España, a pesar de
haber vendido su disco y tener numerosos fans, no acudieron en 2006
pero sí lo hicieron 2007, participando en el MTV day el 14 de Junio.
En junio de 2007 se ha publicado un disco en inglés, titulado
Scream, que va dirigido especialmente a los países de habla inglesa
para hacerse un hueco en su mercado. Sin embargo, ese disco se venderá
y será promocionado también en España y el resto de Europa. En un
principio, este disco no estaba destinado para la venta en Alemania,
pero finalmente decidieron sacarlo tambien a la venta en su país,
aunque con un curioso cambio de título a "Room 483", siendo que
contiene las mismas canciones.
